7/24. Farmer's Markets and Raptors

(7/24 - Saturday)

Craft Fair, Burlington Town Square.

Yesterday we toured Shelburne Farms and spent the night at La Quinta motel in South Burlington near Essex Junction. Today we got up around 7:00 AM for breakfast in the motel before driving to Burlington Town Square to see Becky. The farmer's market (food and organic veggies) is located in the town square alongside the town hall. There is a section reserved for crafts and that is where we found Becky tending her jewelry booth.

We set the GPS and left Burlington to head for the raptor center at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science , VINS, located in Quechee (near Quechee Gorge).

At VINS we toured the Raptor Center and watched an Owl show. The intern told us 'all' about owls, demonstrated their calls; she even got us to try imitating the Barred Owl. (We were great at owl calls, but unfortunately no actual owls answered, not even the Barred Owl perched on the intern's hand).

The raptors and owls at VINS were all invalids, many due to contact with automobiles. The birds were on display in ample cages and some had been trained for the interpretive shows.. The infirmary is on site: serving over 1000 birds annually. The secondary goal of the center is education: classes, demonstrations and workshops are given at VINS throughout the year.

We returned to the road after the Owl Show - next stop was for dinner with Jeana and Peter at their home in Newbury. Newbury is the home of the Sunapee Fair.

Another great day in NH.
